Ok, I have been playing for 4 years and I'm top player at my school. The only problem is I don't know what any of the numbers mean. Like V12s and stuff. I know the reeds but not anythinn else. Well, hope you can help.

A properly worded question will usually elicit a well thought out answer. Most of us will be happy to help, but find it difficult to read your mind as to what you want to know.
Rephrase your query, please...GBK

I think Peter wants to know what the "V" means and what the "12" means.
Peter . . . I haven't the foggiest idea, but it makes for a catchy model name, doesn't it?

The V12 gets it's name from the thickness of the reed at the heel.
The heel of the V12 reeds measures 3.15mm or 0.124 inches - thus the name V12.
I would assume the V stands for Vandoren. However, most clarinetists will probably say that the V stands for:
1. very erratic
2. very inconsistant
3. very frustrating
4. very much work to find a good one ...GBK

Whereas some other clarinetists would describe those reeds as:
1. very easily worked with
2. very beautiful sound
3. very quick response
I am not one of those people

I thought maybe it was like the Jaguar V-12 engine . . . phenomenal when running right, but usually in need of repair.

I think Kyle wishes to know where he can find information pertaining to the "lingo" commonly used by clarinetists. My best advice is to follow this site and just asking questions as you go along. When I came to this site I didn't even know what the Kaspar mouthpiece was all about.

Hey Fred,
I think it was Kyle who posed the question!

Stephanie, look up Kaspar here on Sneezy. They're great mouthpieces!
Fred, don't forget the "take a mechanic as a passenger" if you have a Jag. My policy---get a Corvette!

The numbers refer to the strength of the reed--the higher the number, the stronger the reed.
Kaspar mouthpieces is a reference to mouthpieces made by men named Kaspar, not one of the Maji or a friendly ghost.
Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!
