 Too much moisture?
Author: howard miner

Doing OK with 3 months practice after 50 year layoff, however it seems that there is more moisture than there used to be? Is this another "golden age" symptom? I have a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece, with a 2 1/2 Rico reed, and a Yamaha Custom CSV Bb clarinet.
Thanks, Howard

Good mouthpiece... very good clarinet but reed. I suggest you change the reed, i always feel Rico Reed are too soft and too moisture.

Welcome back to the wonderful world of Reed-Hunting!!!

Richard's advice holds some ground. I would experiment with reeds myself.

Try a 2 1/2 or 3 Vandoren V12 or so because a lot of people like them for their sound. One may have to lightly sand the surface when the grain raises from getting wet. Let's hope there are fewer "senior moments" for all of us.

Welcome back! You gave it up when I was a year old! The 50 year layoff might be something close to a record for this board.

Hi, alll;
I have noodled around on clarinet for the past 55 years, but only since retirement 5 years ago have I started really 'learning' the horn, thanks to playing a steady 'gig' in our church praise band. I have also found sites such as this extremely helpful. As I commented on another thread, if the internet had been around 55 years ago, I might have been a musician rather than a retired EE. Anyway, regarding the moisture question I have been using Rico Plasticovers on an old Arnold Brilhart clear plastic mp and a BG soloist ligature. Moisture is still somewhat of a problem, but then the reed doesn't get too soggy, and I wipe the mp down periodically. The plasticovers are always ready when I have to grab my horn and blow without warming up. BTW it is an old Sears Silvertone horn that I bought when I got out of the army in 1952. It was an old horn then. I have always wondered who made it because it has such a beautiful sound and very responsive according to real clarinet players who have tried it. Happy clarineting to all, you're NEVER too old. regards, Charlie C
