 Pad Discoloration
Author: Erica
Date:   2001-12-30 00:45

I have a Buffet R13 that I bought used earlier this year (March), and I just noticed that some of the pads, mostly on the lower joint, are turning a brown color. Not all over the pad, just where they rest on the instrument. This concerns me... Any ideas on what it is and how I can make it stop?
Thanks,
Erica

Isn't that a sign of aging?

All of my contralto pads have that same discoloration and it's in need of a good pad job. I can't say I know too much about it, but it's definitely not a good sign.

Did you buy the R13 used or new?

It could also be a little of the wood dye getting on your pads, this happened to a few of my pads on the upper joint. It wasn't serious though and they work fine.

Yep, it's a sign of aging. Wood dye, bore oil, dust particles, moisture, they all add up to... discoloration : Nothing to be concerned about unless the pad(s) show(s) signs of wear through the skin or there's some indication of a leak. At this point it won't get much worse, all woodwind pads do this over time to some degree just from compression at the seat. Most cleaners I know about aren't worth the trouble and may shorten the life of the pad membrane. You might ask your repair tech to check your instrument come March (yearly check-up) just to make sure everything's in order. Otherwise, I wouldn't do anything to an R13 that's playing well... except enjoy playing it :)
