A neighbor recently returned from a week in Paris where he heard several street musicians playing what sounded to him to be french folk or street tunes played on clarinet. Seems like a natural ! Does anybody know of a good song, or book I can look at ? Thanks again - and thanks Anji for the beautiful horn....

Our french neighbours have a rich and old culture,
and some different regions like for example la
Bretagne, la Provence, la Champagne, Paris ...
Every region has its own history, its own culture,
its own folk music.
I will never forget my visit dans la Bretagne,
10 years ago, when I was on a festivity where the
young and old people of the community were meeting
in the evening to play the old tunes, and everyone was dancing
in this wonderful summernight ..
These festivities aren't made for tourists. It's a bit difficult
to find out about them. Impossible to say what your neighbour
heard in Paris ..

I've seen several ('American') folk song books in libraries and notice that a heafty percentage of them are adapted from melodies from other cultures. The songs often have a little preface about its country of origin and a little of its history. Many 'foreign' folk songs are sung in grammar schools when studying other countries. A large central library might yield some 'original' French folk songs but, remember, there's always a lot of borrowing and sharing going on.

BTW, I found that site by putting "Parisian cafe" into my search engine, because that's what I think of when I think of musicians playing on a street corner in Paris (even though I've never been to France:-).
To find many of the types of tunes mentioned in their site, a nice source is

Say "Parisian cafe" and I think of Edith Piaf ... and it's only good thoughts!

Heard Karen Akers do her Edith Piaf show, once. More like classical music than folk or jazz.
