As big fan of Bay mouthpieces, I am considering buying one of his hard rubber bass clarinets as a backup and outdoor piece. Who has experience with clarinets made and/or modified by Mr. Bay? Any recommendations of alternatives to this plan of action? Thanks, NH.

I just returned home from the Midwest Clinic, and talked with Mr. Bay there. I haven't played his bass clarinet, but he told me it's basically the mechanism from a Vito (which is quite good, actually) mounted on a bass clarinet body which he has "tweaked" for better response, intonation, etc., and then adjusted the key action and spring tension. Before buying one, I'm sure I would want to play it and see if the results justified the cost.

 Just my two cents' worth.

Charles Bay is a master bass clarinetist and I have also heard "rave" reviews of his "tweeked" clarinets from other players. IMHO, if you can get one down to C, you might consider it for your main-line horn. Good Bassing!!!!!!!

The only caveat I can think of is making sure you actually buy the one you try, not order one.
