Hi to all,
Has anyone had experience with both clarinets… if so, could you submit your opinion on them? There are lots of information on pre-R13 BC clarinets on the bulletin board, but non on Auguste Buffet made clarinets. TIA!

August Buffet clarinets preceded Buffet Crampon, but I'm pretty sure there was some overlap. There have been various threads discussing them.
If the instrument you're thinking about is the one on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1498360955 , I would tend to avoid it. It has two rings on the upper joint, which means there was very severe cracking. When bands are put on, except by the very best people (such as Moennig), the bore gets constricted and the tone loses resonance.

I am also interested on more info on the Auguste Buffets. I have played on one, (much like the one currently on Ebay) am quite impressed by it. I didn't like how the keys felt (thought the bottom rings were too low) but thought the tone and intonation was pretty good. I won a local contest playing the Saint-Saent Sonata 4th movement on it as it was the only horn I had access to at the time when my Festival was in the shop along with my Master Model.
Although my thoughts are based on one clarinet, it is one I've played quite extensivly. My final thoughts is that if a good one is found it can be quite a good players horn. I would classify it as a good doublers horn, intermediate horn or double or third clarinet. I actually did use it at a time when I just bought a pre r-13 and compared it side by side. It does not have a Buffet feel key wise, sound wise it is different but good. It is much better than some of the junk on ebay. If I could buy one for less money than a good Evette Master Model I'd go for it.
I still have not figured out the history of the Auguste Buffet's. From what I pieced together Auguste Buffet started BC. I have then noticed Auguste Buffet under the Holton name and from my understanding Holton is LeBlanc. Mabey someone will clarify what I just said.

Oh no! I wouldn’t buy a clarinet repaired this way, I actually own Auguste Buffet. Clarinet has wonderful tone, but requires complete overhaul. I did find some info on Auguste Buffet, but nothing on clarinets he made.
Auguste Buffet is the holder of the French patent (1844) of the patent for a "clarinet with movable rings" or "Boehm-system clarinet".
Louis-Auguste Buffet (Jeune) is credited with the development of the needle spring on his Boehm flute and clarinet. Philip Bate states that these springs were made of tempered steel or gold in the article "Keywork" in The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (London, 1984).
The Buffet-Crampon workshop was established between 1839 and 1844 by Jean Louis Buffet who changed the name of his company (Buffet fils) to Buffet-Crampon in 1844, Crampon being the maiden name of his wife Zoe Crampon. This name change was probably done to distinguish his company from the rival company of his uncle, Auguste Buffet, Jeune.
