 Squeaking and my clarinet
Author: Arun

Hi, I've been playing for about 4 yrs., and now whenever I play the mid-staff B, C, or D; I squeak real badly, This morning about 15 minutes ago, I went through another episode of this and lost my temper and damaged my clarinet, at that point in time I was alternating my upper and lower joints to see if that would help in any way, and it sort of did but not really. If anyone could give a hint of what I should do or what can be done to improve it before I damage another one, I would greatly appreciate it.

Be sure you've aligned the bridge key properly. Check the first pad at the top of the lower joint. A leak at this point could cause squeaking on the notes you mentioned. In fact, ANY slight leak in the upper joint could be the cause. Bass clarinetists take note!

Also the pad on the "sliver" key on the lower joint (used in playing chalumeau B natural or clarion F#) could be leaking. This would also make the B, C, and D prone to squeak or hard to play.

Very good advice above, I do a bit of repairing and with new pads in particular the bridge key can be a real problem, if too "tight" so as to not seat the B/F pad for fast passages. Also a top-joint and/or upper-lower-joint pad [or the Ab/Eb pad] leakage will show up as a hard-to-get midstaff B. A clar - playing repairperson should be able to find your problem quickly, good luck. Don
