I recently received a set of matched A. Robert clarinets, with serial numbers in the 4000-series. I'm trying to determine an approximate year of manufacture. Where could I look to find this information?

Basically - nowhere. Records of minor instrument makers is pretty much non-existent. Sometimes, if the instrument marking changed over the years we can bracket the age, and sometimes you end up being very lucky and find someone who can actually date their own personal purchase of a new instrument.

I recently had a pair of Robert clarinets. They did play quite well and the Robert firm was a major competitor of Buffet. The instruments I had were in the late 3000 serial numbers, and I would guess yours were made in the early 1930's.

The Wichita Band Instruments website is the first place I'd go if I had to research an oddball or obscure instrument. Their used woodwind listing carries all the "A"-quality stuff you'd expect (Buffet, Selmer, etc.), but also lesser-known makes and even the occasional oddity. Each listing has a brief descriptive paragraph that frequently contains the kind of information you're looking for, PLUS a selling price--always nice to know. (in fact, whack job that I am, I often read their used-woodwind listings just for, er, um FUN!)
Good luck with those Roberts!
