Author: kny

Hi, I'm searching for the score and CD record of Bach's Cello Suites. The Score being written for Bass Clarinet and the recordings played on a Bass Clarinet. Where can I find them?

The score can be obtained from Alea Publishing (http://www.new-music.org/alea.html).

The score Don mentions is transposed up a step to sound the same pitch as cello. Since these are solo pieces this is unneccessary. Better to play from a cello score. The notes lay much easier.

There is a publication of all six suites adapted by Ulysse Delecluse, published by Alphonse Leduc, for Bb clarinet, but there is no reason why you couldn't play it on bass. Have you already listened to a recording of it played on cello? I find this most helpful.

There is also a brand new book of the cello suites out by ADVANCE MUSIC pubilshers. They are transcribed for clarinet by Trent Kynaston.
Here's an extra note. some are not in the original key.....Suite one is for cello in G major, moved for clarinet in C major. 2nd suite from D minor to A minor, 3rd suite from C major to F major, and so on.
Even though it is not in the original keys, it is well written and in the range of the clarinet. Including tempo markings, dynamic markings, breath suggestions, etc. Ther are all ther to helo in your interpretation of the suites. It is a wonderfully edited book, but of course nothing substitutes for the original on the cello.
I have played all of them and it sounds aqward for Bb clarinet, on Bass it brings everything to life.
I picked up the book from Luyben's music in Kansas City. In case you are wanting to find the book. The order number for ADVANCE MUSIC is # 08100 and it is in the "Classics for Clarient" series. Any music store can order the books fro you. I'd try one of the sponsors of sneezy if you cant find it on your own.
Good luck.

Perhaps Aaron is right that "nothing substitutes for the original on the cello", but, for other perspectives, it's worth listening to versions for guitar (Goran Sollscher) and for double-bass (Edgar Meyer). Hearing how others have tackled it might reduce the danger of trying to make your clarinet sound like a cello, which is likely to be both frustrating and fruitless!

I downloaded midi files of the cello suites from the Internet, transposed them from bass to treble clef but kept the original key, copied in the markings from the Peters edition by hand and play them very happily on my basset horn. I tried the Delacluse version, but it is too highly pitched in my opinion, even for the bflat clarinet.
