 Holst and Stravinsky orchestral parts
Author: Andy
Date:   2001-12-16 07:06

I have just found out that I will be involved with performances of Holsts "Perfect Fool" Ballet music, and Stravinskys "A Fairy's Kiss". I was hoping someone would be able to tell me how many clarinet parts there are in these works and if either of them involve a E flat or a Bass part.
Thanks,
Andy

Fairy's Kiss has a third clarinet part which doubles bass (no E-flat). It's been so long since we did the Holst that I honestly can't remember if bass is involved, although I know (for certain) that it does not use E-flat. Obviously, they both have clarinet I & II parts.

While we're on the subject of Holst, how many clarinet parts are in the Planets? Any doubling?

Four clarinets in the Planets: three and a bass

Although Holst indicates it can be performed with three. Second clarinet has to play the 3rd part in "Mercury".

If you are going to play the bass clarinet part in the Stravinsky, you might check to see if it's in bass clef (if that matters to you) as many of Stravinsky's b.c. parts were in bass clef at least part of the time.

The Planets: one E flat, 2 clarinets (B flat and A), one Bass

Sorry, no...there is not any E-flat clarinet in the original orchestral score of the Planets.
