Hey all,
Anyone try importing a horn from another country through ebay or an online store? The tariff rate on clarinets is somewhere around 4.9%, I believe...is this based on the retail value of the instrument or the actual price paid? Is it worth considering?
Any thoughts are appreciated

another thing i forgot to ask...are import duties charged for simply bringing a product into the country (I'm in the USA, forgot to mention that), or are they charged after a purchase is made? i.e., if i buy an instrument on approval, and then decide to ship it back, do i still pay duties on it?
thanks again

Due to warrantee issues previously discussed (twice in the last couple of months) here on the BB, I'd give a lot of careful consideration to purchasing a product outside the U.S., which is destined to live and be used in the U.S.
Never mind import fees.

Customs Duties on "most" products, new or used is 6% last I looked. There are exceptions as some are higher. Call your local Customs Inspector and get the exact amount. Ther are even some that are exempt. So far thats never applied to anything I bought from overseas.

Are you ordering the clarinet yourself, or is a dealer ordering it for you? If a dealer has placed the order for you, you will not pay any additional costs beyond your agreed upon price. I just received a Prestige ordered for me by a dealer.
