 scholarship audition
Author: Sara

Hi, I am going to be doing a scholarship audition on my clarinet soon. Does anybody have any advice on things to do and not to do in an audition?

Anything would be helpful, I have never done this before.

Thanks,
Sara

Sara,

One of the things I can suggest is to take a look at the "winners" page for the Sneezy summer competition. There are specific comments made regarding the music and performance of the different competitors. These comments can give you some ideas of what a professor might be looking for when you audition. Many of the comments I saw there directly related to comments made by judges at this year's Clarinet Fest competition. Things like watching your tempo. Being very precise in your execution of rhythm. etc..

Good Luck!

See http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/Auditions.html for some very practical advice.

play something you know or can learn VERY well. You need to lay it like you're in a box. perfect in all aspects, rhythm, intonation, articulation, everything. I just did an audition for a local band and these are what me teacher told me.

When you walk in, smile and introduce yourself. And stand up while you play!

Sara -

Here are a few postings I've done on auditions:

http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=60585&t=60581
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=43719&t=43712
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=45006&t=44643
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=58988&t=58917

The main things:

1. Come in super prepared on scales in all major and minor keys.

2. Play a little slower than your fastest tempo.

3. Breath deep. Make everything sing.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
