Just taking a poll....I played Dvorak 8th and 9th symphonies and really love 'em. Has anyone played any of his other symphonies, and if so, which ones did you like the best.

One of my favourite would have to be number 5 - also opens with some lovely clarinet writting.

Are you talking about number 5 being the New World, or. . .. because i have seen Symphony number eight appear as number four and the New World appear as number 5

Carmen...The numbering of the Dvorak symphonies has been a thorn in the side of musicologists and music historians for almost a century.
Today, the correct numbering of the Dvorak symphonies has finally been agreed upon. However, today many publishers still put the old numbering in parenthesis as well as the new numbering.
VERY BRIEFLY - Due to a variety of circumstances which: include Dvorak's faulty memory (he actually had forgotten he had written Sym #1- "The Bells of Zlonice") , his very stormy relationship with his incompetant publisher Simrock, and the belief that newer symphonies would be generally more accepted by the public than older ones, the numbering system became a disaster.
TODAY - The G major Symphony, Opus 88 is considered Symphony #8. You will occasionally still see the old numbering used which was #4.
The E minor Symphony ("from the New World"). Opus 95 is now considered Dvorak's final symphony and is #9. Again, you may still see the old numbering in parenthesis, which was #5.
All clear now? There will be a test on the above next week...GBK

Even though it's not a symphony, Dvorak's Cello Concerto might arguably be his most complete and accomplished orchestral composition.
And it has a luscious (and busy) clarinet part!

Although I like most of his work, #9 is my favorite..........and always winds up at or near the top in the WRR 101.1 FM clasical station (Dallas, TX) every year.
Wish I could play it (I can play parts of it (at least well enough to entertain myself).

New #7 is quite nice too. I played it a number of years ago in college. Like those already mentioned it has a great clarinet part too.
