I just returned from the 2:00 pm Larry Combs clinic at IMS on 12/8/01. It was a very informative hour. As some of you may recall, I have been troubled by intonation. With his lecture embrouchur, tounge placement, mouth cavity, and breathiung techniquest I think that most of my problems have either been solved or can be solved with a little woodshedding. I got the chance to perform with him.
Allright. "Perform" may be somewhat of an hyperbole. We played a few C major scales together.
Lisa Argiris, owner of IMS, had abouit 15 different LeBlanc clarinets out for "tasting," including the new Symphony 7. Most who tasted were very impressed with the ease with which that clarinet played. It kind of sucked the music out of you. I was also impressed with the calibre of clarinetist tasters that had attended to hear Larry.
He answered questions and played some. He allowed two of us to play for him and he the commented on our technique and on the interpretation of the music, both as to the specific passages and as to how his comments would apply to any score.
The room was about 3/4 full. I did not get to see the second show.
If you have an opportunity to catch his next clinic, whenever that might be, you might want to consider doing so.
