are there any stores in the NYC area that sell used or vintage R-13s? If I can get a new R-13 for about 1600 and say used ones are around 1000-1200...which is a better deal? Thanks in advance.

In regard to your query about Buffet R13s. I bought my daughter a Festival last weekend and my wife said that the store had a new R13 for the range you cite for a used one. It might be worth your calling Nuncie's in Birmingham, Alabama.
The store is very reputable and I have done business with them for many years, as have other parents I know. Just tell them that Tameka Sexton (my daughter)'s dad referred you.
This will give them a frame of reference. I can't quote prices because I work out of state and was not with them at the time of the purchase. You may call my wife at 205-663-0856 for more information. Her name is Bonnie. Sorry, I do not have the store phone number at hand. The area code is 205 and Nuncie's will be listed as a Birmingham, Alabama or Hoover, Alabama phone number. The Hoover store is where we do all our business with them.
Regards,
Dan Sexton

As for which is a better deal, you may want to think about the different years of production of Buffet R-13's. Some say that the 50's were the best years, some say early 80's, but I think they're making their best horns today. Always ask for the serial number so you can check the serial number archives here at sneezy or the boosey website.

It's not just the "price" of the clarinet, but the actual clarinet you're buying. If your clarinet requires $300 worth of work, but it costs $800, would $1100 be worth the clarinet? Or would a $1300 well maintained clarinet be more to your liking? What about future servicing? How is the tuning?
If you bought a brand new clarinet ($1500 to $2400 for a Festival), you'd get a 1 year warranty against any defects in workmanship (or just about any problem with it at all).
There are a lot more questions that come into the purchasing of a clarinet than just price.

Test fire it first! Some used clarinets can be a horn that is not quite right in tuning or tone, so the owner sold it and got another. It could well be a great one too. You won't know till you have tried it. Take some different mouthpieces and reeds with you.
