I just bought a new R13 Eb Clarinet, its a great clarinet but i was told that a new chadash barrel would make a dramatic improvement in overall ease of playing the horn and make it somewhat better in tune. At the same time i was told that on Eb clarinets chadash barrels are too bright and out of focus and then i was recomended the moenig Barrels, does anyone have any insite or opinions on this? Also does anyone know of any stores that actually have them in stock because IMS doesn't have them and thats where i normally shop and the only place i know of.

My Eb cl. was very much improved by the Chadash barrel. He also experimented with the speaker pipe to get the right combination to improve intonation. It's worth a visit for this purpose.

I have a Chadash barrel for my Yamaha Eb and have noticed only a slight mellowing of the tone--no noticable improvement of intonation. Of course, the Yamaha is a well designed and remarkably "in tune" effer to begin with. I also use a Chadash on my Buffet C and notice similar improvement, not only with the basic sound but also with the intonation in the throat tones. Bought both of them at IMS from a selection of many. Good Clarineting!!!!!

Remember: For the best result you really have to visit him and spend a few hours working on the ultimate combo for your specific instrument. Nobody can make miracles from a distance.
Fundamental intonation of an instrument is always a combination of several factors like: MP-barrel-speakerpipe-bell combinations, but he is also good at detailed work like manipulating the bore and ajusting or moving tone holes if necessary. I've always liked his work and have ordered a clarinet from him.

I had Stephen Fox of Ontario make a new barrel for my Selmer Series 9 Eb. The cost for a wood barrel is $100CAN or just about $60US. I sent him my existing barrel and he made a new longer reverse-taper barrel for me. (The Selmer Series 9's were straight bored horns) Helped bring the overall pitch down and brought the A-C above the staff down into a functionable range. Plus the sound became a bit more mellow. My barrel was away for less than a month it was worth the wait.
