 New barrel for Leblanc Esprit
Author: Victor

I would like to get a new barrel for my Leblanc Esprit. While I understand that individual barrels may vary, I was wondering if people can give me a good idea of where to start. I would wondering if the Moenning and the Chadash would fit well with Leblanc clarinets. Given that they are designed with Buffet clarinets in mind, and since these barrels supposedly help the intonation of Buffet clarinets, would this imply that they may disturb the tuning characteristics of my Esprit?

The reason for me wanting a new barrel is not because of poor tuning in my clarinet. The Leblanc tunes very nicely. However, when compared to Buffet clarinets, it lacks the last degree of power (or ring or whatever else people call it) in its tone. I was hoping that a good barrel can help alleviate this problem (without messing up the excellent tuning properties of the clarinet, that is). Perhaps I should look past the Moenning and Chadash? Any suggestions? Have any Leblanc (especially Esprit) owners had success with barrels that may fit my needs?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You need a barrel specifically for the Leblancs. Call International Musical Suppliers and check out the Eddie Daniels Moennig taper barrels. They're an excellent match up with the Esprits. You might want to try one each of the "power" or "orchestral" models.

Leblancs have a bit different bore size to the Buffets. The barrels might work, but are not the best interchangeable setup.

Thanks for the reply. I just looked the Eddie Daniels barrels up. WW and BW catalog has 3 listed: Moenig Round, Moenig Power, and Buffet Standard. I suppose Moenig Power is what I ought to try? Also, it says that these barrels are for B-flat clarinets only. Any suggestions for A clarinet (also Esprit) barrels?

You might call International Musical Suppliers and ask them what they suggest. That's 1-800-762-1116. There are many manufacturer's out there for A clarinet that would work on your Esprit, but I don't know what might be available.
