I have decided to purchase my first instrument from a dealer in the USA by e mail. They seem reputable. I am in Sydney, Australia
I have enquired about a used intermediate model (even though I am an adult beginner) and have the following 5 selections:
Yamaha 34 @ $375
Normandy Paris Special @ $395
Selmer Signet Soloist @ $495
Buffet E45 @ $495
Selmer Signet @ $350
I will be relying on the dealers advice as to the condition of the instruments but am assured they are all in excellent condition.
I have also found a new Buffet E11 for $499.00 but am waiting to hear back from Australian Customs as to whether import tax applies for only new instruments as this will really add to the cost.
Would anyone have any suggestions on which to go for?

As I recall, and folks will correct me if I get it wrong, but I believe that the Yamaha 34 is not an intermediate horn. My Yamaha YCL-52 was an intermediate horn, but I believe that the 30 series is a student grade horn.
Again, as I recall, the Buffet E-11 is a genuine intermediate grade horn. I compared a new Buffet E-11 to a new Yamaha YCL-52 as peers a few years ago. I purchased the Yamaha. Let me explain why.
One of the good things about the E-11 (if it's new or only a couple of years old), it should have the undercut tone holes. The sound from the E-11 that I played was great because of the undercut tone holes. At the time, the Yamaha YCL-52 had straight cut tone holes. The Yamaha was easier to play, but it couldn't produce the same high quality sound that the E-11 made.
If you have a chance to test play all of the horns you listed, then by all means do it. I personally believe that this is the best way for you to find out what you want and what you like. For instance at the time I needed ease of playing over tone quality, so I chose the Yamaha. That was my choice, based on my personal needs.
