I am playing an etude that has rapid octaves jumps. It is number 24 out ot the rose 32. I practice by starting slow, then gradually speeding up, but just ca't play it. They are not clear and don't "speak" right when I want them to. Everything else is fine. On other sections I have no peoblam tounging or with my fingers. Does anyone know of anything I can do to make these octaves any better?

Are they slurred or are they tongued?
Are these jumps going upwards or downwards?

I see. Difficult. I was thinking about higher notes
needing more air than lower notes. I would start by trying
to play the higher notes louder than the lower notes.
Just an idea. Not at all shure whether this helps.

This is... well, I guess it's sort of related... anyone here like Sousa? We're playing Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in my high school band; those octave jumps at the end (esp. up to the G!) are just killer!

Try to emphasize the lower note and then play the upper note because it will be easier for the upper note to come out since you're already blowing air faster for the bottom note.
Along w/ that suggestion is to separate each octave jump you're having problems with by playing the bottom note...feel the position of your tounge...stop...play the upper note as you normally would and feel the position of your tounge and all that as well...go back to the bottom note and do it again until you know what your body does to adjust normally. then play it at a slower tempo but in time, and you should do better just cause you know what to do to make both notes come out. that's always worked for me!!
