Those PowerTone Baffles....Looks Interesting

Hi everyone!
On one of my peeks through the WW Catalog, I noticed this neat looking little gel-thingy (I think that's the proper term)on the page right before the swabs and such (p. 120 on the newest catalog). This PowerTone mp baffles are said to give more power, quicker response, and better tone. Has anyone tried one of these things? It looks quite interesting, doesn't it? I might want to experiment with these, 'cause I have nothing better to do (besides practice). Plus I do like to try new things. Any opinions? ��]

I have tried these. I experienced that they raised the tone of what I was playing.

I believe they are a gimmick and that it is better just to work at the embouchure - or look for a more suitable mouthpiece or barrel - or all of these.

A higher baffle, such as what is achieved from using the PowerTone inserts, gives more edge to the sound and brightens up the tone. Clarinet mouthpieces have had little variation as far as the baffle, unlike saxophone mouthpieces.

Various jazz, commercial, and fusion style mouthpieces for saxophones have various degrees of baffle heights. As is depicted in the WW catalog at the beginning of the sax mpc section. The lower the baffle the darker and mellower the sound. The larger the chamber the darker the sound. So classical sax mouthpieces range from low baffle/small chamber (standard) to low baffle/large chamber (aka Chedeville). Jazz mouthpieces usually have a standard bore with varying degrees of baffle variation.

I have an old Bobby Dukoff clarinet mouthpiece where he has a streaked baffle. About 5 strips of higher baffle. I like that piece for pit playing in a commercial/jazz setting because it has good projection yet more edge than my Kaspar for symphonic and legit show playing.

I'm not sure exactly whether the PowerTone baffel inserts are reusable. But if they were i would think they would be a nice accessory for people who need to add more edge to their sound for a certain gig but don't wanna have to have a different mouthpiece.
