 Clarinet Cases
Author: J E Dunn

Hi,
Anybody have some recommendations for a good quality clarinet case as well as sources of supply? I have been searching around the web at different vendors and have not found too many that I like...or at least priced in a reasonable range. I'd like to replace the stock case for my Selmer Series 10 with a new one that is slightly oversized with an inner pouch for music.

Thanks,
John

Have you looked at the BAM cases?

Pro-Tec. Don't know the model number, but it cost me about $63 from WW-BW. I'm very happy. It has internal music storage + a slip on the outside that fits folders. External pocket where I keep my stand and polishing cloths, internal cubbies for all the other stuff. I'm very happy with it. The lower price Pro-Tec is much smaller and did not excite me. The only deficiency with the case I purchased is that the barrel lays in the case, and tries to pop loose. So far the inner cover has prevented it from getting loose but it worries me. I think a better design would be to have the barrel stand up in a cavity, which I think would leave enough room to then have 2 barrel cavities.

I've seen a photo of a newer Pro-Tec that looks very interesting also. It may be a replacement for the one that I purchased.

MOO,
Matt

This is where I got my BAM double clarinet case. I love it and the service was great.

I recommend BAM cases as well.

The Protech double case is light weight, economical, convenient, and durable. Good storage space. Spaces for 4 barrels (2 each instrument) and more. The only drawback is that the sholder strap hooks do not pivot - twist them and they may pop off (this may be fixed on later models - don't know.) Mine is 7 years old and still in great shape, especially for such a low-cost item. (Wish they made an A/Bflat/C triple case...)

I also have a Pro-Tec. I am very happy with it. Mine came from a local music store and it was $90.

I don't know if they are still in business, but try Howren Music Company in Charlotte and Gastonia, NC, and Rock Hill SC. I don't know which location I would tell you to try, but chances are the one in Charlotte would be the main one.

I have a case with their name on it that came with a clarinet I purchased about two years ago and it fits your description of what you are looking for in a case.

It is oversize enough to fit many more accessories than a standard case and has a music pocket built into the inside of the lid, yet the outside size doesn't seem to be all that much bigger than a standard case.

It's very nice.

I live in Rock Hill, SC, and theirs no Howren Music here, all we have is an overpriced small music store downtown, but the Howren Music in Charlotte has portecs 56 bucks.

When I only need my B flat, I use a very plain, small plastic case (about $35 or so, I don't know the brand) that works just fine but doesn't have too much room. I put it in a Protec case bag, which has room for all my music and tuner and stuff and looks nice.

Sara,

Thanks for the info, I was going by the lable on the case I have. I think I will also try to touch bases with them about more of these cases.

I've got the Selmer, BAM-equivalent double case. Both are superb; the back pack straps come in handy. Either would survive the Samsonite Gorrilla test.

The Bam trekking (single or double) is a very nice case. I have one that I use all the time. It'll handle music and/or extras like a change of clothes (orchestra apparel) and is lightweight. It also protects my instrument very nicely because the foam lining fits exactly around it without any room for the instrument to move around. The frame is tough enough that it can take something being stacked on top of it (like if it's backstage during a concert).

I clicked the link mentioned above for hickeys music and it is a bit cheaper than woodwind and brasswind--so you might try them.

The case i use is the buffet pochette (sp?) case, unlike the bam and the way too big protec cases, this one is smaller, almost equal to the size of the regular buffet r13 case but even skinnier. It's visually very pleasant to have, it holds your clarinets in tight. It also has space for four barrels and two mouthpieces. Usually people get like alteri case cover for it so they can store accessories.
