I've never done much experimenting with clarinet barrels on my R-13 but I'd like to try some to find out if they offer improvement in these areas:
*even out the resistance between the different registers
*improved tuning between the 12th's of the left hand
*overall improved response
*some "darkening" of the tone
I know mouthpieces can effect each of these areas as well and I have tried a number of mpcs., but I know the barrel can be critical also.
What brand/style/taper of barrel might help in these areas I mentioned? I know there are several "custom" barrels available but I'm a bit confused on the subtle or not so subtle differences between them. I'd appreciate any feedback from players who have experimented with barrels. Thanks!

You can try a R-13 Vintage #2 Barrel. It is either in the nature of a Moening or a Chodash barrel; I forgot what I was told by Mr. Klock. It added some warmth to the sound over the regualr R-13 Vintage barrel for me. You also can try Chodash or Moennng brand barrels to see if you like them.
You can go to just about any retail music instrument store that carries clarinets and clarinet accessories and try out barrels in the store. Some will let you take them out for approval for a week or two if you put up the purchase price (or part thereof) first. Check to see if they have a restocking fee if you buy any or none of what you take out on approval.

I use the Moennig barrels on my R-13s, and have also used the Chadash barrels with great success. I highly recommend both. The Moennig barrel is a bit darker sound, and the Chadash is great for evening out the sound between the registers. Neither one accomplishes both.

Try a JEPP. They're handmade by Chris Jepperson. A Sneezy sponsor. I have one that works very well with both my R-13 and old CONN. It'ss the v-17 model and very reasonablly priced. Good luck...

Dont froget Click barrells which are adjustable and the DEG accubore which are quite popular for traditional jazz because of the increased volume.
