 very old silver clarinet

Hi,

I recently was cleaning an attic and came across a silver clarinet. I played the clarinet from 5th grade throught college and was not aware of a silver clarinet. It appears to be from a company called PEDLER out of Elkhart, IN but i've had not luck in tracing. Any help or suggestions?

Thanks,
Randy

The Pedler company is no longer in business although at one time they made quite a few clarinets. The instrument that you have found is most likely a student grade instrument and therefore unlikely to be silver. Instead it is probably nickel plating over brass.

At one time, metal clarinets were quite common for student & marching band use. However there were far too many that were badly designed and poorly manufactured so as a whole, they developed a bad reputation even though some of course did not deserve it.

Most companies quit making clarinets in the 1950s or before although Noblet (which made a pretty good one) continued until the 1960s or so.

These are fun to clean up and repair just to have a little piece of clarinet history. Overall Pedler was considered to be a decent manufacturer, but not in the same league as Leblanc, Buffet, etc, so the quality probably is not bad.

This is quite funny when taken out of context. :)

I understood. It was just funny to read that clarinets stopped being produced 50 years ago. And I thought mine was new........
