Benny Goodman DID play the first performance of the Copland Clarinet Concerto, but it was not until November 6, 1950 with Fritz Reiner and the NBC Symphony of the Air. The delay of two years from the original date of composition (1948) was due to Benny's busy schedule at that time.

In addition...The first performance of the Concerto was scheduled to be Ralph McLane with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy on November 24, 1950. However, in early November, NBC announced Goodman would do a radio premiere of the work on November 6, 1950.

McLane is credited with giving the first concert performance on November 24, 1950, and also the New York premiere of the work four days later...GBK

The Goodman/Reiner/NBC premiere of the Copland Concerto was broadcast, and an aircheck has appeared several times on various CD lables. It's not a very good performance. The NBC players had no idea what to do with the jazzy licks, and Reiner didn't either. The orchestral ensemble was dreadful, with a train-wreck at the end, and Goodman was not in great form.

Goodman made two early recordings with pick-up ensembles conducted by Copland. Both were excellent. The second has been reissued on CD and is the one to get. The first was even better, but hasn't been reissued, probably due to inferior sonics. Goodman's stereo version, with, I believe, the New York Philharmonic and Bernstein, is also good, the earlier ones are better.

For modern recordings, go for Stoltzman or Blount, both of whom are excellent jazz players as well as classical players and get the mix just right.

Best regards.

The second recording of Goodman that Ken mentions was done in 1963 with Goodman / Copland conducting / Columbia Symphony orchestra.

I agree - that one is the historical "standard" which others should be based upon...GBK
