 Something I just picked up...

Hi!
I just wanted to share a quote my band director (well, he's former now, I guess :( ) said about the clarinet. "The clarinet's notes push toward the floor and spread like a fog toward the audience. The flute's notes push up into the air. The strings' tone stays in the hollows of their instruments-they take the middle." Ok, ok, this is not really relevant, but I like it.

My band director from 9th and 10th (he moved on) used to tell us to imagine pushing the air through our horns and making the dust whirl around us. Great way to get us to support our notes!

Sounds like your teachers are gifted in their profession. What they were doing was putting thoughts in your mind to help you understand a key point. If the "mind picture" worked, they achieved their highest goal: passing on the perspective of knowledge from the grand masters.

This reminds me of the "mind picture" my director uses with us, of a pyramid, in order to help some of my fellow band members understand how we should balance...he explained that a pyramid wouldnt hold if the tuba was on top, but if you picture the clarinets and flutes up there instead, it would work a lot better.

The pyramid idea was used in my band class over 20 years ago. Boy, do I remember it well! I got lectured on it daily for 4 years straight. Of course, it didn't help that we had lots of high end brass and winds and very few middle to low end brass/winds. Let's face it, how many parents can afford a good French horn or a bassoon or a bass clarinet? These horns are very expensive compared to the student trumpet, clarinet, and flute.

My band directors from middle school and high school are good friends so I've heard the pyrimid thing for 3 years now and I'm sure I'll hear it for thge next three years to come. I hear it just about every day in class at least once. I think its one of those things that all band directors say at lease once a year.

I think the pyramid thing is used all over. I've been hearing it for the 2 years I've been playing and I've been assured that I'll hear it for the next 4 years of band too.
