It is not a good idea to tighten the screws so tightly the ligature breaks, as did my Bonade. And I prefer the screws away from my chin, in case anyone is taking a poll. The way most ligatures are made, this avoids tearing up the reed fibers by crushing them in the ligature's "jaws," a technique which I seem to have done too often, as you might guess. I've even thought about manufacturing a mini-torque wrench to keep myself from making the screws too tight and to get uniform ligature pressure. Of course, putting it in the orientation I prefer may scratch the mp.... I personally don't believe there is any overwhelming advantage to either method. That's strictly opinion, not based on any sort of scientific stuff. But come to think of it, that's why people prefer different instruments, too, isn't it.
