Are you looking for an intermediate grade clarinet or a professional grade clarinet. The material is irrelevant. It is the design and manufacturing that makes a difference. However, at this time, plastic instruments are almost all student grade. There are some wood student grade ones among the older instruments but they are no better than the new plastics.

In looking for a good used horn, you need to investigate the quality and level of the instrument and the maker's reputation.

Why not check out the classifieds here on sneezy? There are several people who sell good quality refurbished used horns. This would be a safer bet than eBay. Almost everything on eBay needs some work regardless of what the seller says. They aren't dishonest just not knowledgeable about instrument condition. They think if it can hoot an open G that everything is fine. It is possible to find some good buys on eBay but in general expect to put in anywhere from $40 to $200 dollars into an overhaul after you receive the horn.

I don't know what your price range is, but for under $600 yuo can get a new Buffet E11. I have one, and I like it. It is no professional, but it is a good intermediate. And incase you are concerned about looks it is stained wood and has silver plated keys.

Dear Dee and Sarah

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking for an intermediate model. I saw some posts before saying that you should save money and buy a professional one, but the gap in price is ruge.

I have some experience in buying and selling sax on ebay and agree that is not a good place to buy unless you have enough knowledge to do so. That is not my case.

I found the E11 here in Australia in the same price range, under $600 new, but not sure if that is the way to go.

Dee, you said that in the classifieds i could find good one, but even there I'm a bit confuse to what I should be looking.

Thanks again

Hi

Could I consider this one as a possible upgrade?

The logo in your second ebay link isn't familiar with the current Buffet logo. The key configuration suggests that it is a student-intermediate model.

Just to tell you my story, I found a buffet R-13 in a used instrument band store for only $399. They had it on clearance from $599. There are good used professional instruments out there if you're willing to look. Be prepared to invest in an overhaul when you get it, but it will still provide years of playing enjoyment. (Later you can sell your instrument and upgrade to a brand new professional instrument.)

Currently, R-13's are selling for about $1500. It would be worthwhile to check out financing possibilities. Would they let you pay 1/2 down now and 1/4 for the next 2 months? Woodwind and Brasswind will.

As for which instruments to look for, I'd start with: Buffet R-13, Leblanc Concerto & Infinite, Selmer 10G & 10S, and Yamaha YCL-72 & Custom. There are others. It just depends on your budget and your preference.
