 While in Philadelphia...?
Author: Micaela

I'm going to Philadelphia on Wednesday with my class. It's mostly a college visit trip but we get some free time. I don't really know the city, I haven't been there for years. Are there any good music stores- either sheet music or CDs- in the South Street area? I signed up to go there. Also, are there any used book stores? I would love to see the orchestra but I'm the only person in my class who would want to. :(

This is on totally another topic, but thanks to everyone who gave me advice for my All-County audition. It must have helped a lot, because I was ranked second in the county! I'm playing principal in the orchestra. (Kristin, you said....;D)

Thanks,
Micaela

"The Book Trader," at South and (?) 11th Street. A lot of the good book shops are actually on walnut and Spruce Streets and more toward the center of town---well, they were in 1988!!!!

The Philadelphia Orchestra! Oh my God! How I would love to have been alive in 1953 or so. My moldy Columbia LPs are a faded reference.

Okay!!! I was just home for Thanksgiving and I went to see the Philadelphia Orchestra perform Scheherazade!!! It was amazing! I was on the edge of my seat (which was about as high up as one could get) every time there was a clarinet solo. Micaela, check their website for concert dates.. i'm not sure if they have a concert on Wed. night. You should try to get to Tower Records. I know they have a shop in Center City but I think they have one on South Street as well. There's so much to do in Philly, i'm sure you won't get bored. Congrats on all county! What piece(s) are you playing in orchestra?

Thanks, guys- I'll try to find the Tower and the Book Trader. My school believes that the way to keep everyone out of trouble is to structure nearly every minute of the trip, so the orchestra's unfortunately not an option (but three college visits and "information sessions" are on the itinerary). I'll try to make it to Saratoga this summer (my audition for their summer program's in January!).

Kristin- We're playing the Overture to Zampa by Herold, Nimrod from the Enigma Variations by Elgar and the Berceuse and Finale from the Firebird by Stravinsky. I've never heard of the Herold but it has a solo in my excerpts book. I haven't gotten the music yet. It's at the most northern reaches of the county- about as far away from Ithaca (and my house) as you can get and still be in the county. And how's your Scheherazade going?

The Philly Orch. is fantastic. I think that's one of the benefits to growing up 25 minutes out of the city. They offer a really terrific program for schools.. schools may bring students in on weekends (usually thursdays) to see the Orchestra rehearse and whatnot. It's a great experience. I remember going in elementary and middle school a few times, and it was always a fun day. Now we go a few times a year for our music honor society. Good times.. =)

and to answer your question.. I have actually never been to South Street but I've heard so much about it. If i talk to anyone that frequents it and can find out about book.music stores, I'll post again.

Good Luck.

Ha ha! Micaela I quit the community orchestra (but still kept the music from Scheherazade). Hope your trip went well. I think Enigma Variations has a major clarinet solo but i'm not sure if its in Nimrod.
