I've discovered that the Noteworthy Composer notation software makes it very easy to extract a particular track from a midi file and convert it to the sound of an accoustic piano. In other words, it makes it possible to create a piano accompaniment. The thing that makes Midi music boring -- its monotonous regularity -- actually becomes an advantage for practicing. I created some files with progressively faster tempi in this way, and loaded them throught the line input onto a minidisk player, which allows me to reproduce them through the stereo system. It sounds OK -- not as good as a real pianist, of course, but good for sightreading and getting timing right. The program can also produce a decent score out of the midi file. Does anyone have suggestions about how to refine this idea.

You can insert dynamics in Noteworthy Composer which will be executed on MIDI playback. You can also insert tempo changes, I believe. Just hit F1 and start seaching the online help.
There is also a Usenet Newsgroup for Noteworthy. Go to the support are of their website and find out how to subscribe.
