I have been playing clarinet for a while and have never had a problem with endurance. I have been faithfully practicing, and have not changed my practice schedule, but within the past week I have found that I cannot play for very long without my teeth hurting my lower lip. I have read all the posts on how to keep your teeth from hurting your lip, but I was wondering why I have this endurance problem all of a sudden. Does anyone have any idea why, and what I can do about it?

All of a sudden things happen that we don't understand. The first thing I would do is go to your DDS and see if something has changed in your mouth and then go from there.

Have you recently increased the strength of your reeds or changed mouthpieces to one that is more open? If not, then I agree with Bob that you should have your embouchure area checked by your dentist who is trained to recognize a whole variety of dental and oral medical conditions. If the problem is serious and one that he/she cannot correct, then you will be referred to a qualified doctor or medical specialist. Do not dely in seeking help too long if this problem persists and does not seem to get better or go away. Good Luck!!!!!!

Have you started a strenuous physical activity in the recent past? Every year when my swim season starts, it affects my endurance severely, and takes about a month to become acclimated to it. It might be possible that to accomodate for a newly added fatigue on your body, you've had to switch to biting a little harder than usual in your playing. Just a possibility.

The lower teeth sometimes get sharper with time passing and hurt the lower lip. I've asked my dentist to round them off a little and this feels better. Thus, no athletic tape or protector is needed to keep from irritating the lower lip. Good luck!

You could be inadvertenly clenching/grinding your teeth at night during sleep which could really screw things up. Do you have headaches or feel achy jaw muscles below the ears?
