ADVANCED STUDIES for CLARINET by V.P.--Right???? I have always been successful just using the regular fingerings in slurring down from the A to the E--just takes a little practice, like everything else. If all else fails, you could lightly tongue the E to make it speak easier, but the slur should work with time. Good Clarineting!!!!!

I would advise NOT to lightly tongue the E on the descending line. That is a crutch, and this is a clarinet concept which should be mastered with practice.

With the proper embouchure and breath support, this should not pose a difficult problem. Use the proper fingerings for the high A and high E, however (and I'm sure you are already doing this) make sure the High A is vented with the LEFT pinky C# key, On the change to the E, switch pinkys to use the RIGHT Eb key as the vent. This, of course will make the notes speak easier and the pitch will be correct.

Polatschek was a clarinetist...He KNEW what he wanted to emphasize when he wrote these studies. Therefore, it just takes practice...GBK

GBK--I'm in total agreement with you--the "crutch" should only be uses to help with the initial learning process--then should be quickly discarded to gain skill with the slur. BTW, the same learning proccess also applies to learning to slurr UP to A from E.

Alyson--try practiCing, not practising--but the key concept is PRACTICE. Don't give up--you'll get it. :>) Good Clarineting!!
