 Metel tone holes
Author: Jasmine

I have seen several older instruments with metel lined tone holes..it would seem these would be very accurate in size, and smoothness, why are'nt modern instruments made this way?

I'll go out on a limb here. Metal tends to expand and contract at a rate different from wood or plastic. It also is not affected by moisture as is wood. These factors would make metal inserts for the tone holes a source of problems over time and the cost of maintaining the setup may not justify the additional expense of engineering and maintenane

I agree w: Mark's comments, I believe the nickel-silver alloy [actually Zinc, Copper and Nickel] has a higher coef. of expansion than wood so that a large increase in temp. might cause the wood to crack. However, I have an 1820 [?]wood flute and a mid 1800's clar. which have survived so far with tone hole inserts, prob. used so as to wear better than the wood hole. From those early clars that I have seen, few show much wear around the non-ringed tone holes so apparently its no big problem! Don

Sometimes if a tonehole is cracked, or in danger of cracking, it will be replaced with a metal insert.

Jas -
Whether a metal insert was done in the manufacture of a wood instrument or as a repair proceedure seems like a poor choice. The repair manuals I've read recommend using a compatible material for tone hole replacements and wood or plastic material is sold just for that purpose. I agree with Don and Ben, if you use something else you'll probably have a worse problem sooner or later.

I have to agree with the postings above if you are looking at all of the tone holes but the left thumb tone hole and the register key tone hole. As far as I understand it, these tone holes are always metal lined. You will also find a metal tube sticking into the bore by a little bit from the register key tone hole. This is expected, otherwise you wouldn't be able to make the register shifts happen on your clarinet.

Regarding the thumb and register tone holes. I believe that both of these are metal lined and project up into the bore of the clarinet to keep condensation from coming out those holes on the bottom. Wrap around register keys on older clarinets did so because they use an external vent tube on the top of the bore.

Albert and Mueller clarinets sometimes have metal lined thumb holes which extend a small ways into the bore but often have nothing. I expect that if you played such an instrument for a long time on a humid day you could end up with moisture coming out the thumb hole.

Very true, of course the design and length of the register vent tube is of utmost importance to the quality of the "pinch Bb" and yes I have had watering from the thumb tube and particularly from the C#/G# side-located hole [very poor design!] prob because of how I hold the cl! Don

I suggest that you look at the posts entitled Pruefer [below] for additional info. Don
