There is a mouthpiece up on ebay called and unmarked lelandais - what is that? it is ebay number 1485280675.

It was manufactured by the lelandais or (later) the chedeville company prior to the company being sold to Glotin in the late 60's. These markings are an indication of the quality of the material more than anything else. These 2 French firms made so many different kinds of mouthpieces and blanks for so many different companies and individual makers with so many different interiors that only the material can be counted on as being of high quality. The rest is a gamble.

I have a very old wooden Lelandais, a "Qualitie Superiore" Cundy-Bettoney, a "new" Chedeville, and two old Buffet mpcs (thought to be Chedeville blanks). Each has very different venturi and chamber styles.

Lalandais was a Chedeville trademark. According to Kalmen Opperman, they made mouthpiece blanks in several quality levels. The best quality had "Qualite Superieure" stamped alongside the right edge of the table, running up from the bottom.
This mouthpiece sold for $125, which is a decent price since it had no other markings. Also, when you look at the pictures, you see a brownish ring at the bottom, which indicates it was exposed to sunlight in that area, which can cause the rubber to deteriorate. Things like this are a crapshoot. I wouldn't bid on it without an ironclad return option.

Wow---I had always heard Chedeville "bought out" Lelandais. Of course, both could be true---they bought them out and used their stencil.

Ken is right although I believe that Lelandais was seperate from Chedeville at one time only to be bought out and incorporated into the Chedeville company later on. At what point this happened exactly, I'm not sure. In other words, there are many stamped Lelandais that are very old and not necessarily from the Chedeville company.
The mouthpiece blanks that Kaspar (of both Cicero and Chicago) used were from the Chedeville company - "qualitie superieure" stamped blanks (non-finished mouthpieces with no trademark) with that marking filed and buffed off in the finishing process by Kaspar himself.
