 Circular Breathing
Author: C@p

Would anyone be able to discuss circular breathing, how it is done, how long it might take to learn, or what resources might be available on the web to read about it?

Thanks

In an effort to answer my own question, I looked at the archives and found many posts but without the ability zero in on the relvant parts that answered my question. I did a search and found

http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/CircularBreathing.html

which I will print out and read.

Any comments will still be welcome.

This has been discussed in this forum before. Click on "search" and type in
"circular breathing" and you will find many discussions and resources on the
topic.

Good Luck!

One more tips, I did it in Bass-clarinet first, get the idea, and then do it in Bb. Pratice the tone lower E, much effective than open tone.

There will be some landmark stages in your development:

1) switch from diaphragm to cheeks.
2) switch from cheeks back to diaphragm
3) steps 1 & 2 + breath in (one cycle)
4) play one note continuously (low register)
5) expand capability to all registers
6) breath in the middle of a complex phrase.

I can do it now on my soprano (Bb) horn, but the big trick is maintaining a good constant tone during this. I am now tring to do it on my contra. Its the hardest thing I've ever tried, but some say it CAN be done on the contra.
