For those of you who have been dying to know the difference between the Buffet E11 and the E12, here's the skinny direct from the Boosey & Hawkes web site:
"The E12 has the same features as the E11 but the bore gets a special treating that makes it more sophisticated."
Now I tend to think of myself as somewhat sophisticated and my students will generally proclaim me a bore but, aside from that, what in the world makes a clarinet bore more "sophisticated."? And more sophisticated than what? Does this mean the E11 has an "unsophisticated" (uneducated?) bore? or merely a "less sophisticated"one? Or perhaps an "unsophisticated" bore is a little rough around the edges and the "more sophisticated bore" is smoother? (So is the "special treatment" sanding?) Egad!
And I used to think that Leblanc was guitly of the worst hype.

A more sophisticated bore has the center of the wood reamed out, leaving only the upper crust.

I think they're discussing the reaming style used prior to the Caree polycylindrical bore---that being the "polynomial bore," in which any number of words can be used to describe the bore dimensions and effects. --Bill F.

One of the most valued members of the team at Buffet Crampon is the boremeister. He's the guy who puts the personality into a clarinet after it comes off the computer-guided drills. He told me he's been doing the job for more than 30 years, and he has a drawerful of special tools ranging from reamers to feathers. I assume he spends more time on sophisticated bores than on the rest, hence the difference in price. By the way, who says a bore needs to be mirror smooth? I thought the opposite was true.

It can't be for the E-11 and E-12 since they are not made at the Buffet factory, but at Schreiber. (Or is this the about the boremeister at the Schreiber plant, boremeister does sound quite German)

Smooth or not? The bore of my former Leblanc Symphonie VII (rosewood model) was not very smooth. But, most are pretty slick inside--especially after oiling (if you're pro-oiling).
I would say the "extra sophistication" is exactly as mentioned above, extra time and personal touch, combined perhaps with tapering, etc.

The $64,000 question is, of course, whether the alleged 'increased sophistication' of the aforementioned bore translates into an audibly more 'sophisticated' tone quality, or tangibly improved response as sensed by an impartial player. I remain skeptical. I smell a marketing rat. I'm keeping my wallet shut for the time being, pending scientifically-conducted experiments confirming or denying any actual performance improvements rendered by the 'sophistication-enhancing manufacturing operations' described herein. So there.

I agree with IHL's comment, it could well be an advertising "ploy", but actually might be a slight modification of a cylindrical bore, ala Carree and others, for tuning-in the 12 ths, or fraized tone holes for ease in playing. Would take careful measurements to decide. Luck, Don
