Hello everyone,
I am on my high school band's commitee for choosing next years drum major... my question is, other than the obvious skills (marching technique, commands, etc.) what should one look for in a drum major? What are good ways to recognize leadership skills and to weed out people who just wouldn't be able to handle the job... a big concern of mine is choosing someone who has the skill, but just crushes under all the pressure (which happens to be one of the major reasons I'm not running for drum major :-)
TIA for the input,
- Jessica

This one is so off-topic that I request that those who have something to offer to Jessica please do it via private email.
Thanks,

Mark---how is it so off topic? It deals directly with marching band, which I believe was a very long thread not too long ago. C'mon, we've had more off topic threads--ie "Look what I found in the archives" or "WARNING" or I could go on...

Julia,
I make the decisions, and while they may seem arbitrary, they're not. This board has evolved over time; threads you see in the past may or may not be allowed now or in the future.
And, for your edification - while there are clarinetists in marching bands, they are playing clarinet, not playing drum major. I'm sure you can tell the difference.
If you'd really look in the old posts you'd have found more than one "marching band" thread that's been stopped for wanderiong too far afield.
