I have to do a research paper for an english class I am taking, I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. No need to elaborate or anything, I just need some clarinet related ideas.

How about the history of the clarinet or the history of the clarinet in jazz. If you don't want to do a history of it then try something about the roles that it plays either in a concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, or even in a marching band. Personally I think that a history would work well for a research paper.

I was thinking of history, but I need to narrow it down quite a bit. Only 5-7 pages!!

How it relates to a memorable Personal Experience in (what grade are you?) a certain (short) time period - happy time, sad time, embarrassing, joyful, goofy, mundane, tragic, whimsical.... time.

Just make sure you do something you like! I've written too many papers for which I've had the topic forced on me. They would have been so much better if I had been able to choose my own topic. If you have that luxury, make the best of it!

I would second, strongly, the personal aspect of the project. Discuss how you bought your clarinet, for example, using the help and research resources of the hundreds of qualified folk of the "Sneezy Family." Discuss the "family," why it is called what it is, how it was formed, what is it's purpose and how much it has meant to your in your personal quest to be a master musician. Discuss some of the "wierd" characters, their strange sense of humour, their devotion to the love of clarinetting. How some are active card carying professionals, others very gifted amateurs, and some (like me) "wannabe's" trying to relive older days through young folk like you. Heck, we could even make a movie of it. You will be hard pressed to keep it under a hundred pages when you really get into the swing of it.

How about the use of the clarinet in American popular music from 1900 to present day. You could touch on ragtime, Gershwin, the rise of the big bands (clarinet in the Glenn Miller / Dorsey bands, etc.) Goodman, Shaw, Fountain, and some of the current pop tunes / commercials where the clarinet is featured. Maybe also try to predict where clarinet use is going to go next. Electronic?? ...GBK

You know Pytagorian scale invented by Pytagorian school?
It is near perfect scale and greek harp was tuned in this scale.
This Greek religeous school invented many ideas including musical scales. Of course it involves famous Pytagorian theorem of geometry. Late Mircea Eliade of Chicago university elaborates this school relative to religeon in his famous three volume book. Relative to musical scale, there are plenty of resources on net.

How about discuss how the clarinet has changed or added to your life. What would your life be like without the clarinet (I know, less frustrating).

sarah--
It sounds like part of this assignment is for you to get practice in researching a subject. If that's the case, then a personal story might not be what the teacher is looking for.
You might want to start at your local library branch (city or county system; or perhaps college or junior college) and see what books, recordings, etc. are available about clarinets and clarinet playing. Work with a librarian; s/he can usually help you find the various sections to look in. Availability of source material may help you define your topic.
History of the clarinet would be way too big for the length of this paper, unless you narrowed the date range as suggested in a couple of the posts above.
A biography of a famous clarinet player might be a possibility, although you should consult more than one source and that might involve more reading than you have time for for this paper.
A topic that might fit your requirements would be the wood used for clarinets. You can research its properties (key search words, for example: woodworking, carpentry); its origins (key words: ebony, rosewood, grenadilla, African blackwood); its relative scarcity; and suggested future substitutes (cf. Buffet Greenline). In addition to what may be available in your library, there's material available on the Internet about this topic. (Of course, always be careful about the source of information on the Internet; there's a lot of misinformation and opinion stated as fact out there.)
A bigger, but possibly manageable, topic would be a basic discussion of the acoustical properties of the clarinet, perhaps comparing it to other woodwind instruments.
Just some thoughts; hope they're helpful.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Before I wrote this I did think about researching materials and such. Once again thank you.

Sarah,
I am doing a research paper right now on the history of the D clarinet and why they choose to keep the Eb instead of the D. If you want a topic that will need a lot of research, but is very interesting at the same time this might be a thought.
Good Luck,
Sara

Mark,
By :they" I mean that the Eb became more comman and the D is very uncomman as far as my research shows. I guess "they" would be the composers and the clarinet players at the time.

For something more clinical:
Research specifically clarinet music from any catalogue sources (Sneezy?), perhaps divided into categories, and then graph the number of compositions for each year, to find any patterns in the growth of clarinet composition. You make postulations or even research as to why these patterns exist.
More specific patterns may emerge such as the rise and fall of the clarinet sonata.......
