I'm living in Virginia in Fairfax County. I want to know that if there is any opportunity to play in band or orchestra besides the district band.. (I'm a high school student). I really like to play with a group (I don't care if they are band or orchestra or ensemble) especially in these days. But I cannot find an opportunity to try out for some band or orchestra near me.. I actually have tried out for senior regional orchestra but I couldn't make it. That's not only because I didn't spend much time on practice but there were too many people who were going to major the music.. I certainly have a disadvantages because I also need to spend about 8 hours for a day for my school work. But still, I really want to play in some good band or orchestra before I get into college.. I don't thnink I'm a terrible player, but not as good as those of who are trying to major the music.. Thanks for reading my problem..

Won,
Please contact me off-line and I'll point you in the direction of a number of groups in the area here. I'm playing in a few Fairfax County community groups myself, and while I can't guarantee you'll be able to join them (there are actually waiting lists for players!), I can at least let you talk to someone about it.

Another thing you might want to thinka bout is starting your own ensemble. Last year Mindy's band director put together an ensemble of the 1st chair woodwind players from the band and they were to play for just one short performance. Well, as you can imagine, he didn't have time to really work with the group and so I took them under my wing since I had TWO girls in the group (out of 5 kids in the quintet). They began rehearsals once a week after school and as they continued to practice and get to know each other better, they decided to NOT stop as a group once their performance was over. Needless to say, they have been playing together now for over a year and have a PACKED December calendar and have played many concerts and background dinner music all year. They practice together every Saturday for about 3-4 hours and 2 of the kids are in teh Youth Symphony, too, so this shows you that there are many opportunities out there for those who want to MAKE it happen. We live in the Orlando, FL area and so you can imagine there are MANY musicians around in teh area. Maybe this will give you a thought of what you can do.

I live in Southeast Virginia. I think you're fairly close to DC so you might wanna try to be in AYP, American Youth Philharmonic, 2 of my friends from Tanglewood were principal of AYP.
