 Just curious...

Hi,
I'm from Alabama and I just tryed out got jr. high all-state(9th grade) last Friday. You may have read my posting under Benny's topic "Allstate". I said that I had made All-State/All-District 2nd chair. Well, the next morning my band director called back to inform me that the people at the auditions had made a mistake on my score and I did NOT make All-State but I still had 2nd chair and district. You can imagine how I felt and still feel. He said there was nothing that could be done about the situation, but my family and I aren't satisfied. I'm furious that the person adding the scores didn't double-check mine before telling me I made it! Imagine yourself being awarded the most important thing in your life then no less than 12 hours later having it taken away from and calling it a mistake. It's definatly not fair! Has anyone here been in a situation similar to this? I just was curious if anyone could relate to me in some way or another. Thanks! Julie

Julie you could concentrate your energy on who was to blame and make them pay , probably some Mom like yours trying to help out. Or... You could chalk it up , saying now that disappointment has had it's turn ,my next move is to put this energy into becoming First Chair. Your choice; the energy belongs to you and your progress, why waste it?

A friend of mine was in a similar situation a fw years ago. When the seating was first announced, she was 2nd oboe in the region orchestra. And my band director's daughter was 4th chair (she's one of the best college oboists i've ever heard). According to TMEA rules, results aren't final for an hour after they are posted but after that hour nothing can be changed unless the person fails a class in school and is therefore disqualified from performing. Half an hour later the results were discussed and thruned out they had gotten the players number confused and they flipped chair placement. Some say it was fiar.. other's say my band director pulled some strings... who knows...

Look at it another way. Presumably the correct addition actually reflects the way you played, and the incorrect addition was giving you credit to which you were not entitled. Would you like to go to all-state with false credentials? It wouldn't have been your fault (assuming you didn't know about it) but never the less, you would be receiving a reward which you didn't earn.

Many years ago when I was a student, the bank deposited some $1000 to my account in error. Should I have been mad because they corrected this error?

I agree.

However, since the All-State (in whatever state you are in) Officials rarely release the final scores, there is no real way of knowing what exactely happened, unless you know some big time hauncho who has the name to sway some poeple into talking.

If you are actually convinced that there are some kind of shady goings on in the All-State Auditions, you may be able to get the All-State organization to release the official scores AND judges critique sheets for a recount.

Julie,

I can understand your disappointment, but I think it is important to put this behind you and put your energy into positive thoughts and actions. I'm sure this isn't the first or last disappointment in your life. I always try to put things in the proper prospective and priority. Remember that for most people -- God should be first in your life, then family, and finally career or in your case school.

Also remember there is always next year!!
