To let the community know, late Tuesday evening, clarinetist John Denman passed away. John battled Esophagel cancer and the effects of chemo. John was a ever the gentleman and always willing to help fellow musicians.
The clarinet world will surely miss one of the greatest.

John Denman was a wonderful player and one of the great enthusiasts. He lit up the room with his playing. He was a remarkable jazz player in addition to classical. The four Spohr Concertos suited his style perfectly, and I think his recordings of them are the best available by a wide margin. I also treasure his recordings of the English repertoire, which I think were issued only on cassettes and were not transferred to CDs.
A great loss.

I have a recording of his Spohr Concerto #2 with a Stamitz on the reverse side (vinyl) . The excitment with which he plays the Spohr makes my hair stand on end. His tonguing is amazing throughout. He make the most of the drama in the slow movement; slow, dream like with love followed by the highest frenzy of excitement, ever growing, and then slow and loving again with tenderness to clam every soul. Truly a wonderful musician.
