 Info on Luisa di Montfort??
Author: katie

I'm working on my program notes for an upcoming recital. I will be performing Scene and Air from Michael Bergson's opera Luisa di Montfort. I have looked everywhere I can think of and haven't come up with any info on the piece or the opera. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Katie -

A Google search on Michael Bergson turned up http://www.multimania.com/ideologues/Bergson.html , which is in French but reveals, even to my very rusty skills, that he was a Polish pianist and composer who lived from 1820-1898 and was the father of the famous philosopher Henri Bergson.

The search also turned up an excellent posting on the Klarinet board at http://www.sneezy.org/Databases/Logs/1995/10/000269.txt by Diane Caewin, who did a Ph.D. dissertation on operatic potpourries for clarinet. She appears not to be at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln any more (she's not on the faculty list), but a query here and on the Klarinet list might find her.

The two places to start your research are Grove's Encyclopedia of Music (the sub-set on opera is more up to date than the complete set) and Baker's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Any music library or large public library will have the them. Another possibility is the opera lists on the Web.

Best regards.

I can also add to Ken's post the following:

Michael Bergson was born in Warsaw in 1820, and died in London in 1898, however he lived literallly all over Europe (Paris, London, Vienna, Berlin, Leipzig). He was appointed head of the Geneva Conservatory in 1863. He was primarily a pianist, most notable writing a "Concerto Symphonique", and "Polonaise Heroique", along witha number of etudes and chamber works.
The opera 'Luisa di Montfort' was composed in 1847 in Florence. As it seems his works were successfully published and performed, it appears he lived rather comfortably...GBK

One additional fact...Bergson, born in Warsaw, Poland, was Jewish, and some of that heritage is reflected in his music...GBK
