Dan,

As far as I know, there is no source for a center tenon tuning ring other than DIY (do it yourself), i.e., take a plastic tuning ring and sand it down to size.

I had the same problem with finding tuning rings for Eb soprano clarinet, DIY was the solution.

this is a lot of work if you don't have the right tools, but you can make your own "custom" tuning rings by cutting the bottom of an old junker mouthpiece and sanding it down to size. Then you can size it to the barrel tenon or the middle joint. Cheaper than buying a ring that might actually be undersized- my experience with comercial tunning rings has not been very happy in this regard.

Heres another solution for maintaining a constant space at your middle joint and providing stability and a tight, leak-free seal: "O" rings that you can buy cheaply at your local hardware store in the plumming department. They slip on over the "male" tendon, provide the same spacing every time you assemble your clarinet for consistant tuning purposes, will keep your middle joint from wobbling, do not fall off during storage and will not leak. You just have to pick the right size for the exact spacing that you want. And, if you need to change spacings, they are easily removed. And for those of you that are color sensitive, they come in "clarinet" black and will not distract from the natural beauty of your instrument. And, no need to worry, the space left in the socket is not accoustically significant to the performance of your clarinet. Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!!

Dan -

I'd say sand the available rings down. You only have to do it once, and you get a custom fit.

William's suggestion of an "O" ring will work, but it won't fill the gap between the bottom of the tenon and the bottom of the socket, which has to be done both for intonation and solidity of tone.

A different solution was suggested on the Klarinet board recently by Steve Hartman. Have a repair shop glue a ring of cork to the end of the tenon. See http://www.sneezy.org/Databases/Logs/2001/10/000093.txt .

Steve is a wonderful player who makes his living at it. I trust anything he says.

Best regards.

Hi Dan, from OK, saw this thread, made up a ?good? post, phone rang, its gone, will try to re-do. I experimented with barrel rings, of machined aluminum, on back, and recently with O Rings. For my LeBlanc and Selmer mid-joint tenons, a Thick 7/8" [22mm] OD, is likely a bit thick at 1/8" [3mm], but does quite well fill up the gap, so the thinner one might be better. Of course for continuing use, Ken's suggestion sounds great, will try. Will add, if I recall the earlier post !! Don

Anybody with a metal lathe can make these reasonably easily, to any size, given suitable stock material, such as ABS plastic, Acetyl, brass.
