 Question
Author: Laur

Hey !

For the past few weeks, I've been making a College Portofolio CD. It has 10 songs of various performances i've been in, ranging from solo, to jazz, from orchestra to band. It's about 7 min. long - I took selections, cut and pasted it song parts, faded, it came out pretty good ! My best friend made a wonderful cover and label, it's looks great. One question- Will Colleges actually take a look at this, or will it just get like passed over ? Should I mail it to them, or hand it to them durning auditions ?

Laurie

This is the second posting of the same, exact thing.

Be patient, sometimes it takes as much as a couple of days for everyone to answer, those who will answer, that is, if anyone is going to answer.

I can't give you an opinion because all the years I sudied music I did so with private European tutors and never had to make recordings to be accepted by any one of my tutors, but I know many professional musicians, who play one or more of just about every instrument imaginable, who are forever sending CDs everywhere and to everyone.

If you do, get yourself a CD burner. You can copy your CD for as little as a dollar a-piece and what's postage?

By sending out your CDs you may appear persistent, and it may be worth your while to do so, albeit, not in a pushy sort of way. But nothing beats being a promising, if not an excellent musician for your level of playing.

And pardon me for pointing it out, but "Question" is one of those nuisance thread topics that actually says nothing about the topic , so readers waste time looking at something that does not interest them. How about "Performance Portfolio for Evaluation" or something equally descriptive.
Just a suggestion for some thought for your next thread. You can do it!

And a note for those ready to pounce on me: this is intended a constructive suggestion - not a negative ctriticism.

I am a performance major, and work in admissions. We send everything music related to the music school. And make a copy of things as needed. I don't know what is done with cds. Once we listened to a cd that someone had sent that was heavy metal. It was quite funny.

Hi !

I only posted it a second time because everyone seemed to be blowing my post off. - Gordon, you looked at my question didn't you? - I had a 'creative' subject prior to this, however no one looked or responded to my question.I'm sorry if i seem persistant, just as a senior in high school, dealing with a lot of stuff, i'm very ansy and stressed right now.

Don - why would there be any copyright problems ? I have permission to make the cd, conisdeirng it's mainly my high school band/orchestra/jazz ensemble perfomring. ? My director helped me actually.

Laur,
Posts aren't "blown off" ever. If you get answers, be thankful, but if you don't get any - wait a good long while before re-posting. No answers means people don't know the answer ....

The copyright problems are that you are playing somebody elses work unless you wrote and arranged the pieces yourself or are playing only public domain music.

I think that this concern over copyrights may be misplaced. Do audition tapes routinely carry copyright-related baggage?

Here are some guidelines regarding "fair use" under the U. S. copyright laws:

Allen,
remember that we're talking about a custom recording here ;^)

Since you're not selling the CD, only using it for demo purposes, it wouldn't come up on the radar of the copyright police.

Sorry guys, but all this copyright stuff really is misplaced here.

As I said before, I know way too many musicians who, for years, have been sending audition CDs off to other people and nobody has ever had anything to say about any copyright laws.

Needless to point out that the music recorded on these CDs has never been anything but duly copyrighted music. By comparison, there is very little music out there that is not copyrighted.

So why not just stick to Laur's original question and not become involved in legal issues we would need a roomful of lawyers and thirty years to settle?

Will an audition CD help Laur get into the college of her choice? Will it be worth the trouble of making it and sending it out to schools?

Hey Laur, for whatever it's worth, I don't see where it can hurt.

I disagree Peter - this as good a place as any for people to understand that there's such a thing as ownership of music. Whether or not people disregard particular laws and for what reasons perhaps belongs in a different place.

Mark,

I agree, partially. The thing is that we have gone off in two different tangents and have yet to address Laur's specific question.

That we should address the copyrights issue, that's all right too. I too would like to hear all the opinions concerning it, perhaps as a mention here, then as a more detailed discussion in a thread of its own?

As for here and now, how about Laur's specific question?

Is there anyone out there who can give an opinion on whether or not it might be worth her while to make and send out demo/audition CDs, as a tool to portray her musical abilities?

I know there are those who figure that if they don't have specific information on a subject they should stay out of it. Sometimes that is often quite true.

However, many times there are people out there who have the general and varied knowledge and experience to make an intelligent contribution to certain topics, but don't do so.

One example of this is when I asked the question "To oil or not to oil..." Though that was not a question which deals with an exact science, there was enough intelligent input and discussion involved for me to make my own decision as it befitted my particular situation.

Here is another question which begs only for intelligent, educated, knowledgeable and experienced people to provide some such input so that one (or more) less experienced and knowledgeable person(s) can make an intelligent decision for themselves.

So,,, Is there anyone out there who can give an opinion on whether or not it might be worth her while to make and send out demo/audition CDs, as a tool to portray her musical abilities?
