Hello.
I just have a question. I know that their are many differences between Bb and A clarinet. I want to know that what happens when I play a piece written for A clarinet with my Bb clarinet. I found an interesting piece "Capriccio" by Sutermeister and want to play it at Solo&Ensemble. But since I don't have an A clarinet I need to know that if it's going to affect to the music seriously if I play it with my Bb Festival. Then I would play Debussy's Preimiere Rhapsody. Thanks.

To the listener there will probably be no discernable difference between the horns you might select. However, since the horns are tuned a half tone differently, any accompaniment scored for one will not work with the other unless some one does a lot of transposing.

Isn't the Sutermeister an unacompanied piece anyways or am I thinking of a different piece? If it is then it really wont make a difference.

As Joseph said, paying the piece without accompaniment will probably not make a difference on the Bb. I have a Music Minus One recording of Motartz' Concerto in A. The backup orchestration was for an A clarinet which played in the key of C. The music for Bb has 5 sharps. I tried but I could not keep up in 5 sharps.
So, I just played the A clarinet part in C and it sounded fine to me and anyone else who would listen.
It should be the same with your situation. Perhaps you can find somone who knows what good clarinet music should sound like and play a few bars as a test martket attempt.

If you played Mozart concerto with a Bb clarinet with the accompaniment in A and you did not transpose, then I do not see how in the world it could sound fine...
You must play REALLY flat, or need a second pair of ears.

The Suttermeister piece will be just fine in Bb. Only clarinet players who know the piece might frown because you played it in Bb. I would not worry about it. The Debussy is a nice piece too, but quite challenging.

You would need to transpose. There are also differences in the tone quality, i prefer the A clarinet sound any day of over the B flat, if you are a serious player who plays with an orchestra or plan on majoring in music, i recommend you get that Buffet Festival in A but if you don't care to go that far, then, just stick with what you have and transpose.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who couldnt keep up playing the Mozart Concerto with 5 sharps. I also played the A part on my Bb clarinet but it sounded terrible with the accompaniment. Sure wish I had an A clarinet for that one.

Won: I am going to presume that you are a high school student and are playing this for a contest. It will make absolutely no difference for you to play this on your Bb instrument in a situation similar to this since the piece is unaccompanied. No one will probably notice the difference unless they are a performer with the symphony or a college instructor. If, however, you decide to play this on an "A" clarinet, make arrangements to rent one rather purchase one for just this piece. They are quite expensive, and you will rarely have use for one unless you do play with a symphony or opera orchestra somewhere. In my earlier days it was easy to transpose for a C clarinet, but I hated the half step tranposition for the A parts, so I got an A clarinet, and never regreted it at all because I used it quite frequently. Since my pro days are over, I have no use for the instrument but constantly play my Bb instrument. Money wasted? Not on your life as it helped to put the beans on the table. Now, it is just sitting around. My advice is play the solo on your Bb instrument and don't change a thing -- don't even think about transposing, play it just as it is written as you will be playing unaccompanied.
