well, this is probably a useless attempt to find a piece for solo and ensemble, but i see no harm in asking for advice. i'm becoming very picky about pieces that i'm playing, at least pieces that i'll eventually perform. i played the mozart clarinet concerto for 8th and 9th grade solos, then in 10th i played the messager solo de concours. i've gone through the weber stuff...which is good, but i don't want to play any of it for contest. then there's the debussy which i took a stab at, but i've decided to do that my senior year because it's such a great piece. now i'm just really stuck because there isn't too much left on the class A list that i'm too interested in. so now i'm thinking of possibly just playing a solo that's not on the list and going for comments only. the only thing i don't want is french music, so if anybody's played something fantastic lately, i'd be forever grateful for some suggestions. thanks!

personally, I reccomend the ORIGINAL (benny goodman) arrangement of "Sing Sing Sing". That'll teast your mettle1 (parts 1&2)

What's on your list? I only know New York solo lists. What state are you in? Do you have a really short list? I love to complain about the New York list but it really isn't that bad.
Out of other pieces, I've enjoyed playing the Finzi Concerto, especially the second movement, which I played for a solo festival last year. I'm a junior too, I'm working on memorizing the Mozart now for a concerto competition (you can never play this piece well enough!). If you can find someone else to play with, the Mendelssohn Concertpieces are great, the Stravinsky Three Pieces and the Copland Concerto are also worth a look. A lot of auditions require a solo piece, the Stravinsky is really good for that. I was going to recommend the Variation sur un air de Pays d'Oc by Cahuzac, it's a fun piece, but you said you didn't want French music. It is slightly Messager-esque.
Don't mention the Benny Goodman Sing Sing Sing solos to me! I've been trying to play those right for a long time. I just can't get the style quite right- I'm too classical, I guess.

Try the Hindemuth SONATA for CLARINET.
SING, SING, SING was a Fletcher Henderson arrangement that Benny improvised to. The best way to learn it is "by ear" from a recording. You will never learn "the style" from a transcprition.
Also, try the Artie Shaw CONCERTO for CLARINET (a favorite of mine)
Then, there is the CLARINET POLKA (up tempo and tongued)

At the moment I'm working on Copland, I like it very much. There used to be a Clarinet arrangement of the Paganini violin etudes, they are quite impressive.

Too many works to mention, so little time. Right now I'm working up the "Sonatina for B-flat Clarinet and Piano by Antoni Szalowski". I'd highly recommend it.

What area do you excell at in your playing? Is it fast technique, tounging, good sound, expression, ect...? You must ask yourself this before asking what piece you want to do. Do you want a piece that will challenge you on material you need improvement on or do you want a piece that you will not be as challenged on? What style music do you like to listen to? You must answer these questions before picking a piece. If you like the Debussy then you might consider that this year. I think that you should do a piece you love because your going to be working on it hard so you don't get tired of it.
