 RUBANK ?
Author: Roger Harvey

In an earlier thread Chuck Kelly referred to tutor books by RUBANK. Where are these books available. I've searched Amazon and several Australian book sites to no avail.

Thanks in advance,

Roger--

Rubank was a music publisher in Chicago many years ago. They put out a popular series of method books for most of the different wind instruments. Their clarinet method books and authors were: Elementary Method (Nilo Hovey) Intermediate Method (Joe Skornicka and Robert Miller) Advanced Method (Himie Voxman) Selected Studies (Himie Voxman)

They also published other study books and solo collections.
I went through all of them in the 1950s (Robert Miller was my first real clarinet teacher). I believe that all are still in print and readily available at reasonable prices.

I have the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced I, and I found them all at music shops. Many times music shops only have the elementary, but I found the Intermediate and Advanced at sheet music shops and such.

Ever heard of Mars? They have a large selection of books like that. Haven't been to too many other places.

As far as I can tell, the Rubank series of drill books are the most common books available on the US market. Almost every retail music store that I have found so far in my metro area had all three series of Rubank books readily available, right off the shelf. These books are extremely popular with the US K-12 education industry, which explains why the books are so readily available everywhere I go. I believe that these books are published by Hal Leonard, which is a very large music publishing company (in the amount of material placed on the retail market).

I don't have Web information on Rubank or Hal Leonard in my hands to give you right now. But, I can't help but believe that these books are available through almost any general music retailing establishment in the US, including Web based businesses.

Many thanks everyone. Australian music shops don't seem to have these books, but I did find them at Southern Music on the 'net.

Tahnks again for your help.

I personally used a "low tech" solution to fill my drill book library. I sent a relative of mine to Southern Music Company with a long shopping list. The staff did some digging and found all of the books on my "wish list" in a few minutes. I got about half a dozen fairly well known drill books for about $75 (US) retail. I believe that Hite has a bunch of drill books that are published by Southern Music Company, including the Baermann series, The Italian School (series), The French School (series), and lots of others.

My guess is that if you submitted a list of drill books via the Internet to Southern Music Company along with the purchase price and shipping costs, you would get the same results.

If all else fails and you reach the end of your patience, Email me for a version of the low tech solution.
