Can y'all tell me some pointers for my next competiton? It is called ATSSB, it is a Texas competition....AND well, I dont know exactly what the judges are looking for. So can someone give me some "hints"? THANKS BUNCHES!!!!

Hello Casey,
ATSSB stands for All Texas Small School Bands. Basically, the smaller schools in Texas formed their own association back in the early 90's. It was hard for them (students) to comepete with the larger school band students with their private lesson programs. It began as a stand alone organization and now has an association with TMEA. It still serves the same purpose in that it provides an alternative for the student in the small school program to be part of a region, area and all state band and the appropriate recognition.
Having said that, it is about the same. We (judges) are looking for good tone quality, good articualtion skills, technique, demonstration of proper dynamic contrasts, and confidence. There are scale requirements so don't overlook those. You can play the bejeesus out of the music and if blow the scales you won't make it....period! Get those scales down. The diatonic scales are 25 pts per and the chromatic is 50 pts. Then you have your etudes. Each of those is scored as 100 per for a total possible score of 300. You will have to play two major scales and the chromatic. The only problem is you don't know which two the judges will pick until it's time to play. Get them down COLD. I don't know which region/area you are in, but I'll be judging it on November 10 in 9/23.

Tune up carefully before you go in. If you play out of tune, you'll lose points.
For auditions, take scales and sight-reading passages a little slower than you think you can play them. It's more important to get through without stopping than to play fast. Then, if they ask you to try it faster, you've already played it once.
Count like crazy, especially on the rests. More points are lost by jumping in before a rest is over than for any other reason.
Finally, do exactly what they tell you. If they say to start at the beginning of a line, but all that's there is a whole note and a rest, the worst thing you can do is skip those and start the solo or the fast notes later in this line. That's a deliberate trap, to see if you follow directions.

I am going to be at Region 20 South Zone All-Region Band Auditions on Nov.10 in Duncanville. I don't think this is the same one, though. I am in 8th grade. Anyway, please wish me luck!
