Hey-
Does anyone have any good ideas for Solo and Ensemble this year?!?! Please help me out here!!! I have a piece picked out, but it's TOO easy. I am in da' 8th grade, and i am sort of an advanced player, i guess you could say. PLEASE help me. Also for ensemble!

well.....see we don't know what state you are from and so we don't know what is on the list for s/e......ummmm......It also matters that you might think you are an advanced player (which you probably are I am NOT saying you aren't) and how much of an advanced player you are? What pieces have you played before? and then maybe someone or at elast can help figure out a piece if you want help still.....I want to do the Mozart Concerto this year but I'm not sure what my teacher will think of that.....do you have a teacher? if so then talk to him/her and he/she should be able to help you pick one..... I hope this "helps" you a little!!

There is not a sanctioned middle school Solo and Ensemble contest by UIL in Texas. There hasn't been for many years. It got to be too big of an operation for the regions so it got nixed a long time ago. Any S&E for middle school in Texas is now generally sponsored by school districts. Some are "invitational" in that they invite neighboring school districts to help defray expenses. Since it is not a UIL contest you are not bound by the UIL Prescribed Music List or PML. Most band directors will want you to pick a solo from the PML because most judges are familiar with them. Go with the flow if that happens.
What did you play last year? Was it a Class II or III? Have you looked at any Class II solos off the PML? If so, are the too hard....too easy? We need some clues as to your abilities as well, and then they would just be suggestions. I don't think one can make an honest appraisal over the internet. Ask your band director for help of a clarinet teacher isn't available.

Try a couple of movements from the Vaughn Williams Six Studies in English Folksong. These are beautiful. These will help develop your tone, control and phrasing.

The year b4 last (I didn't go last year) I played my solo from Rose 32 Etudes. The judge liked it. I don't remember what number....and my section leader did another out of the same book by the way. They're advanced enough for me, but I"m not all that great. And in my 8th grade year, I played "the Dancing Doll." For ensembles, our director suggested some books like Selected Duets for Clarinet, or trios, or whatever. Hope this helps!

You did have a Solo and Ensemble contest, but it is not a part of UIL...it will be when you are in high school. Your school district, a local university, or other organization is sponsoring it...not the state of Texas. I probalby gave you too much information.

PML = Presribed Music List, I think Texas is the only state that calls it by that name. I taught in Missouri for a while and they also have a published list, but I can't remember the exact title. Your state may call it something else...your band director will know.

When I was in eighth grade and felt I was advanced, I played The third movement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto for a solo/ensamble piece. I ranked superior, but it took a whole lot of work and dedication. If you are willing to practice and dedicate yourself, that would not only break the eternal bore of Jr. High band (that's my opinion, of course), but it is really fun and a great piece to add to your repitoire. Also, for competitions like this, it is not a good idea to choose a piece way too hard for you. Most judges prefer a slightly simpler piece played beautifully over a harder piece that you fumbled through. Good luck, I loved Solo&Ensamble.
