 Tone in the upper register
Author: Jason
Date:   2001-10-26 03:50

In the past few weeks I've really come to feel that I have a somewhat strident, bright tone in the upper register, and I was wondering if anyone could prescribe exercises or some other remedy that might work to help round out or darken the timbre. Also, what major factors affect the upper register tone that are easily alterable?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi,

I would try to take a bit more mouthpiece and "round" the embouchure.
If you put a bit more pressure from the corner of your lips you can also round the sound a bit.
I find the biggest factor in the upper register is the position of your tongue.
I have no miracle recipe for this, you have to experiment in order to find
a sound that you like.

A good exercise is to do slow scales trying to keep the same sound from bottom to top concentrating on the configuration throat/tongue/lips.

Good clarineting,

Jason -

Here's a link to an exercise I've described several times. Go to my posting, about halfway down the string:

Many people recommend using an "EEE" vowel shape and tongue position for high notes. My experience has been that this makes the sound too bright and leads to squeaks. What works for me is to concentratre on keeping an "AAAH" shape as I go higher.

Good luck.
