They're both fabric ligatures that are intended to give a darker sound... what professionals use them and what is the general consensus?

I use the BG Super Revelation, and have done so for several years after being shown one by my clarinet professor (a wonderful soloist in his own right). Ricardo Morales uses the BG Super Revelation as well as many other soloists. I think it's far superior to the Rovner (even the Eddie Daniels II), but it's a matter of opinion and you have to make your own decision. I think I get a darker tone and easier articulation.

I have a Rovner which I find a little brighter than my Bonade (all metal). I have never been impressed with it. Last week I tried the BG revelation ligature the second clarinet in orchestra was using. It was worlds different from the Rovner. It was actually very nice, a little better than the Bonade. I am going to have to buy one or try some of the other goofy looking set-ups which are available now.
The Rovner is just a band of fabric tightened onto the reed. The BG has some metal pieces which I always thought were just gimicks to sell the lig. In fact it does respond much better than the Rovner... don't know if it is the metal do-dads doing the improvement however.

There are lots of different models of BG ligatures. The Revelation and Super Revelation models have the metal bands that are vertical and fit over the reed to increase vibration and resonance. It's amazing what different ligatures, mouthpieces and reeds can do for an instrument. A good set up--plus a good tuning barrel--can turn a bad instrument into one that sounds pretty good.

Here is my opinion on both of these ligatures. First the rovner has a poor response and doesn't allow the reed to vibrate, it will only make you sound dull and stuffy (not to be confused with dark tone). To be honest, i don't know any professionals besides eddie daniels that uses this liguature (talking about his model) because of the reasons i have stated, Personally i consider all of the others in their line "student" ligature.
The BG Super Revelation is what model im going to chose to talk about about becasue its the highest model in its design meaning that is cloth with a gold metal insert. It's a good ligature, it has some great qualities yet I have to say it still doesn't compare to that of a full metal ligature. Personally out of all of the BG line i would say their "orchestral" silver ligature is the best.
If looking at ligatures, i would also say to look at the Vandoran Optimum ligature because it i think has pretty much taken a world wide aceptance, if cost is an issue, look at the bonade ligs.

The Rovner Eddie Daniel II ligature is not designed at all like the rest of the Rovner product line. It performs quite differently. When comparing the two, it might be desirable to compare the BG Super-Revelation with the RV ED II.
The RV ED II allows for a high degree of "fidgeting". It has removable plates, flaps that can be put over or under the rails, etc. The manufacturer booklet indicates six combinations. One need to experiment.
What works for me: No plate and flap over the rail (to provide the tonal feel of an all-fabric ligature). But since the flaps are on top of metalic rails, the projection and resonance is similar to a metallic ligature (such as the Optimum). I move the ligature a bit lower than the mouthpiece line to take care of response (a perenial problems with fabric-centric combination).
In essence, my use of the RV ED II gives me darkness, projection and response.
I have about 20 different ligatures at home (including the BG SR), and this is the set-up that works best FOR ME.
The BG SR is a fine ligature, but is a bit too bright for me. It performs like the excellent Oligature (and all metal model, but with a great engineering). All other metallic ligature (including the floating rail type from CB and PS) have great response and projection, but are too bright.
The key point: try many, fidget a lot, and trust your ears.

I play on the revelation and i think what has happened is that the left rail on the inside of it hasn't worn as much as the right causing there to be an imbalance in the way it sits on the reed... i think i might have to get another one.... i switched from a rovner and i'm never going back!! though i am considering a Bonade inverted, just gotta find someone who can make the necessary adjuments.
